How does a water softener system work?

A water softener works by passing hard water through a tank of resin beads that exchange calcium and magnesium for sodium or potassium ions. Over time, the resin is flushed with a brine solution made from softener salt, which removes the collected hard minerals and recharges the resin so it can keep softening water.
